Reset your outlook!

If you are struggling with depression, in a rut, or have been let down by someone, how do we stop this from influencing our day?

1.      Consciously realise that other people’s actions are outside of your control. They themselves may be battling their own demons. Sometimes it’s easier said than done, but we can choose what we let affect us. Choose in this moment to let go of all that you can’t influence. You can’t control other people’s behaviour, only your own, so putting yourself first and making yourself a priority is paramount to a healthier and happier day. Ask yourself what serves you in this moment? Then act on it.

2.      Journal. It’s an outlet for your feelings. I only realised the power of journaling in my mid-thirties, after reading The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. It’s a wonderful book for changing your perspective and it changed my life.  Anything and everything that springs to mind, down to the most trivial thought, write it down. Spend at least 30 minutes doing this every morning. I can’t stress how beneficial this will be for you. My best and most creative ideas come during this time. Feel your feelings, cry if you need to cry, a heavy heaving cry if it needs! Write these feelings down.  Journaling allows you to consciously expel your thoughts and worries from your body, allowing for a greater sense of clarity and inner peace as you move forward through your day.

4.      Make time for yourself, whether it’s to catch up on sleep, take a walk, exercise, read the book you’ve been meaning to start or get a massage. What can you move around in your day to ensure you get this time for yourself? Perhaps cancel something in your schedule to make this happen, would it be the end of the world? Would the benefit of this time, out way the negatives?

5.      Spend time with someone you love, your children, your parents, your partner, your pet! And spend quality time here. Put your phone away. Notice the detail. The sun, the warmth, nature, invest in the conversation, and this precious time, be playful, show love. Time is all we have in this world. Make every moment count.

6.      Treat yourself! Life is too short to worry about those extra calories or pennies (within reason). Buy the dress, the shoes, book the holiday! Life is for living! Thrive and enjoy it.

7.      Worry less & take on a ‘f*ck that’ attitude. I’m not suggesting you be rude, but as long as you’re doing your best and being the best version of yourself, if someone wants to complain, let them. Embrace your life, your decisions and your desires. Say no if you don’t want to do something. Value your time, your health and your happiness. Don’t over commit.

8.      Do something today you’ve never done before. If you’re thinking of going for a walk today, turn right instead of left. Explore the unknown. You never know what you might learn or where it might take you.

9.      Worried about dating and finding ‘the one’? If you’re not in a happy place in your life, this is not the time to be looking for a partner. Focus on yourself, de prioritise dating for the moment. You do you and I promise they’ll find you in the end. Fate has a funny way of stepping in when you least expect it and when you’re putting positive energy out into the universe.

10.  Lastly, and what I will always come back to.. Yoga. Movement. Breath. Yoga is a tool for not only your body but your mind.

Follow the four Paths of Yoga:

Bhakti Yoga: The path of devotion and love. Merging with the divine through devotion and surrendering to a personal deity, guru or divine principle. This practice includes meditation, prayer and chanting.

Karma Yoga: The path of selfless service and action. Purifying your mind and reducing the ego by performing actions without attachment to the outcome and with the intention of serving others. This practice includes acts of kindness, volunteering, and charity work.

Raja Yoga: Royal Yoga. The practice of meditation, breathing techniques and the physical aspect of yoga, asanas (postures). Practicing self-discipline, to still the mind and attain enlightenment.

Jnana Yoga: The path of knowledge and wisdom. Studying scriptures and philosophy as well as introspection and meditation. Achieving self-realization through the understanding of one’s true nature.

May you go forward on your journey with love and happiness in your heart.

Namaste,
